Mother's Day

What celebrates Mother's Day better than home-made stuff? That's what I learned during primary school, I think it's part of a basic Australian education.

This jam comes with extra-special kisses, which I'm hoping will get it across the line for taste. I know it tastes ok, it's full of sugar, but it doesn't have as much pomegranate flavour to it as I was hoping.

Happy Mother's Day!

Typography Sunday

On Sunday my brother and I attended the Type By Hand Workshop held by the Australian Type Foundry's Wayne Thompson and Gemma O'Brien. My brother is a lot more into typography and hand lettering than I am, but with my focus on becoming a better illustrator this year I couldn't pass up the opportunity. It's not all the time you can attend a workshop with someone you know and I love hanging out with my brother. People always think it's a bit strange that we're both in the same field, but we move in such different spaces that it's not at all often we get to work side-by-side. My brother has such a quite energy, I really enjoyed watching him work.

One day we're going to create something amazing together.

The other attendees were a mix of students and professional graphic designers. It was very interesting and inspiring to look around the table, and the room, and see what others were coming up with. I'm definitely going to practice more (I need it!) I have to think of a good quote to work on. I worked up the words 'Just Believe' which Franklin suggested before I went, you can see a version of it below. I like it, but I'm not super happy with it. I would've liked to have put something a little bit more unique together, and found visually balancing those two words difficult. Sitting here thinking about it, I am thinking of quite a few different ways I could've tackled it, I think it's back to the drawing board for me!

Yay!

Butterflies of happiness

I wasn't going to, things have been so hectic around here recently, and I think I am going to move away from the diary-style posting. But I can't really let the first anniversary of her birth go by (too much further) without acknowledging it here.

I have been trying to find a photo of her flat-out grinning, which she does from time to time. I can't think of a better way to encapsulate the feeling of joy I have in knowing my daughter. How can one person's smile be so restorative? It's like a cliche scene from a k-drama, so soppy and cheesy.

Just thinking about that little face, the budding teeth peeking out, eyes all screwed up, the dimples, the chuckle - I have butterflies of happiness.

Happy first year my little baby mouse. I love you.

On a side note, I'm loving working again. I sort of knew I was missing it - but now that I'm working again there's a sort of deep down satisfaction.

One whole year later

So I was sort of doing a monthly update here on The Mouse's (TM's) progress, but now she's 1 year old, I'm not sure I'll continue.

I have several reasons for this: I don't really want this to be a blog all about my baby; I'm about to start 'working' (read 'freelancing' or 'Oh My God, what am I getting myself into?!') which I want to start to incorporate into this blog (somehow) without making it boring or like advertising or even like self-marketing too much as THAT is also extremely boring; and essentially this is a blog about my life and the things I enjoy doing so I can look back and remember.

Essentially (le sigh) what will change is the target audience, mostly it's just me writing for me at the moment - not much pressure there. But my plan is to sit down and map out a kind of 'shape' for my business and a persona for my business 'face.' Obviously the face is my face, but I'm actually not prepared to throw my whole self out there hoping the internet will catch me. I think there are a few people who have done that and it's worked, but they're the exception not the rule.

In the mean time though, my daughter has turned one, which means we've been mum and mouse for a year now. It's been tumultuous.

Yes, tu·mul·tu·ous [too-muhl-choo-uhs] adjective
1. full of tumult or riotousness; marked by disturbance and uproar: a tumultuous celebration.
2. raising a great clatter and commotion; disorderly or noisy: a tumultuous crowd of students.
3. highly agitated, as the mind or emotions; distraught; turbulent.

But mostly great.

I made her a dress for her party, after finding something expensive in a store that I liked but couldn't afford. I used another dress she already owned to make up the pattern. The first one I made fit, but only just, the second was great. I'm slightly obsessed with Peter Pan collars at the moment - can you tell?

Knitting takes ages

The good thing about knitting is you can do it in front of a movie, or while chatting to friends. The bad thing about knitting is how LONG everything takes.

I think my forte is knitting beanies. For babies.

I have just finished this jumper for The Mouse (TM), and fortunately I made it a size 1 so it's going to fit perfectly this winter. Don't think this is clever because when I started this jumper three years ago I had no idea about TM or when she might come along.

I will admit I gave myself a small round of applause upon finishing, then I threw it on the ground to take a photo of it.

Tassel-bunting, the next big thing

OK, so it's probably been done before plenty (quick Google image search...yep, plenty) But I like mine the best. And, when I say mine, I mean to give it to Sair at some point, as I made it for her Kitchen Tea.

*blink*Christmas-Camping-NYE*blink*

So somehow we're already, I feel, well into 2013. I suppose that's because Franklin has gone back to work (his first day back was such a sad day in our house) and we've left 2012 far behind in our minds and in it's place is March 2nd 2013! This is the wedding date of two of our dear friends, and Franklin and I are both in the wedding party. So tonight, very briefly, I'm pausing to look back at Christmas, Camping and NYE, before I think yet again about how the 2nd of March is only 8 weeks away...

So!

Christmas was a lovely day, and as I pause now in the act of typing thinking 'if I write about the lovely food, family and presents, that's actually boring - everyone has that' I remember actually feeling so grateful this Christmas for my families, for our ability to access fresh food and the fact that we have enough money to make or buy each other presents. The Mouse (TM)'s first Christmas wasn't spoiled by shouting, or accident. Nor was it in any way lacking food, warmth, love, or presents. If I thought even for a second that luck had something to do with it, I would say we were lucky, but the truth is we a very blessed. At Christmas time it is so easy to remember we are lovingly created with a purpose and a hope.

We left for Meredith Park, Lake Colac on Boxing Day and had a lovely, if sometimes trialling time away. TM slept surprisingly well in a light, noisy and wind-blown tent next to her mum and dad. White noise was definitely our friend, and I came to love (that's to strong - 'be thankful for' is better) the spider-filled shady tree we were camped under for that reason.

I managed to force-squeeze some camping 'musts' into our trip - roasted marshmallows and damper - which we ate on the very last day. I must say the damper turned out exceptionally well, a good team effort.

It was an absolute pleasure to begin 2013 with seven of the best people that I know. Sure, I know a lot of other people that I love as dearly, calm down BaSiL, and if I didn't have TM I would've loved to have spent NYE in a hot tub. But as it was TM slept while we ate dinner, gorged ourselves on the home-made ice cream sundae bar provided by our generous hosts, had our own little light show and then went to the river to watch the very impressive fireworks over the river.

Oh, and we ate the macarons my mum and I made for Christmas but completely forgot about - strawberry and balsamic vinegar flavoured. Super yum.
